Edgware by BBICO Valve Brush – High Brass is a specialised cleaning brush for piston valve casings and valve passages in high brass instruments, particularly trumpets and cornets. It features resilient, high-quality Japanese nylon bristles together with a protective coating along the metal stem and tip to help prevent scratching of the internal valve surfaces.

Part of the professional Edgware instrument maintenance range developed by the British Band Instrument Company (BBICO), this reusable brush is designed for regular instrument care and long-lasting performance.

Why is regular valve cleaning important?

During playing, moisture enters the internal tubing and valve assemblies of brass instruments. Over time, condensation, lubricant residues, mineral deposits and other contaminants can accumulate inside the instrument.

Piston valve assemblies are particularly sensitive to contamination. The piston must move smoothly within the valve casing with minimal friction, making the cleanliness of the contacting surfaces essential.

Accumulated deposits can contribute to:

  • increased friction between moving components;
  • sluggish piston valve return;
  • uneven distribution of valve oil;
  • build-up inside valve ports and passages;
  • irregular or restricted piston movement.

The Edgware Valve Brush helps remove accessible internal deposits mechanically as part of routine instrument maintenance.

Instrument compatibility

The High Brass version is designed for high brass instruments with piston valves, particularly:

  • Trumpets: cleaning piston valve casings and accessible valve passages.
  • Cornets: routine cleaning of piston valve assemblies.
Important: Edgware offers separate Valve Brush High Brass and Valve Brush Low Brass models. The High Brass model is primarily intended for trumpets and cornets, while Low Brass is the appropriate range to consider for larger low brass valve systems. Always check that the brush fits the internal diameter of the component being cleaned.

Features and benefits

  • Premium Japanese nylon bristles. Resilient fibres maintain their shape and are designed for repeated cleaning.
  • Protected metal stem. A protective coating reduces the possibility of accidental scratching inside valve casings.
  • Protected brush tip. Helps prevent direct contact between exposed metal and internal valve surfaces.
  • Suitable for different finishes. According to the manufacturer, the brush can be used regardless of the instrument's plating or finish.
  • Long-lasting construction. A durable, reusable cleaning accessory that can reduce the need for frequent replacements.
  • For students and professionals. Suitable for regular maintenance in music schools, brass bands, orchestras and private practice.
  • British design and packaging. Developed and packaged in the United Kingdom for Edgware by BBICO.
  • Compostable packaging. Supplied in a NatureFlex bag manufactured from wood-based cellulose.

How to use the Valve Brush

BBICO recommends cleaning valves approximately every six weeks. The ideal interval depends on playing frequency, environmental conditions and the instrument manufacturer's maintenance instructions.

  1. Preparation. Carefully disassemble accessible components according to the instrument manufacturer's instructions. Note the position of each piston to ensure correct reassembly.
  2. Pre-cleaning. BBICO recommends using Edgware Brass Soak to loosen accumulated deposits before brushing.
  3. Cleaning the passages. Gently insert the brush into valve casings and passages of a suitable diameter. Move it backwards and forwards without excessive force.
  4. Rinsing. Thoroughly remove loosened residues, following the instrument manufacturer's cleaning guidelines.
  5. Drying. Remove excess moisture with a soft, lint-free cloth such as Edgware Care Cloth, and allow internal components to dry.
  6. Lubrication and reassembly. Apply a suitable valve oil and reassemble the instrument, ensuring correct piston alignment and valve guide positioning.

Caution: do not force the brush through narrow passages. Avoid brushing the precision working surfaces of pistons unless specifically instructed by the instrument manufacturer. Even a coated metal stem cannot eliminate the risk of damage caused by improper handling. Severe deposits or sticking valves may require professional maintenance.

High Brass vs Low Brass

Model Primary application
Valve Brush High Brass Trumpet and cornet piston valves
Valve Brush Low Brass Larger low brass valve assemblies

Choosing the correct size is essential because an excessively tight brush may create unnecessary resistance and increase the risk of mechanical damage.

Edgware's environmental approach

BBICO aims to manufacture and supply durable instrument maintenance accessories that reduce the need for frequently discarded cleaning tools.

The Valve Brush features resilient nylon bristles selected for their ability to retain their shape during repeated use.

Its packaging reflects the brand's environmental priorities:

  • a compostable NatureFlex bag made from wood-based cellulose;
  • a label made from 100% recycled content in the EU;
  • compostable packaging twine manufactured in the United Kingdom.

Edgware Valve Brush High Brass is a practical maintenance accessory for brass musicians, students, teachers and technicians who need to keep trumpet and cornet valve assemblies clean and functioning reliably.
