Edgware by BBICO Valve Brush – Low Brass is a professional cleaning brush developed for the valve casings and passages of piston valves in low brass instruments, particularly euphoniums and tubas. It features high-quality Japanese nylon bristles together with a protective coating along the metal stem and tip to minimise the risk of scratching the internal surfaces of valve mechanisms.
Developed by the British Band Instrument Company (BBICO) as part of its Edgware instrument care collection, the brush is designed for repeated use and long-lasting performance when cleaning larger piston valve assemblies.
Which instruments is the Low Brass Valve Brush designed for?
The Low Brass version is intended for low brass instruments with piston valves, which generally have larger valve casings than trumpets and cornets.
- Euphonium: cleaning the internal surfaces of piston valve casings and accessible valve passages.
- Tuba: removing deposits from larger valve cylinders and piston valve passages.
- Baritone: suitable for compatible piston valve mechanisms of the correct diameter.
- Other low brass instruments: suitable where the dimensions of the valve assembly match the brush.
Important: this brush is intended for instruments equipped with piston valves. Rotary valve mechanisms require different maintenance procedures. Always check that the brush is the correct size for the internal diameter of the component being cleaned.
Why should valve casings be cleaned regularly?
Condensation continuously forms inside brass instruments during playing. Over time, organic deposits, old lubricant residues, mineral build-up and other contaminants can accumulate in the tubing and valve block.
Piston valve mechanisms operate with small clearances between precisely fitted metal surfaces. Even relatively minor contamination can interfere with proper lubrication and smooth valve movement.
Regular cleaning helps to:
- remove residual valve oil and accumulated contaminants;
- reduce the likelihood of sticking valves;
- maintain free movement of piston valves;
- support even distribution of fresh lubricant;
- keep accessible valve passages clean.
The brush forms part of a regular instrument maintenance routine. It removes deposits mechanically but cannot correct mechanical wear, distortion or damage to the valve assemblies.
Design features and benefits
- Premium Japanese nylon bristles. Resilient fibres retain their shape during repeated cleaning.
- Protected metal stem. A special coating helps prevent direct contact between exposed metal and the inside of the valve casing.
- Protected tip. Additional coating reduces the risk of accidental scratching when inserting the brush.
- Low Brass sizing. Designed for larger piston valves found on euphoniums, tubas and similar instruments.
- Compatible with different finishes. According to BBICO, the brush is suitable regardless of the instrument's plating or finish.
- Reusable construction. Durable design helps reduce the need for frequent replacement.
- For all playing levels. Suitable for professional musicians, music students, teachers and instrument technicians.
- British development. Designed and packaged in the United Kingdom.
- Compostable packaging. Supplied in a NatureFlex bag made from wood-based cellulose.

How to use the Valve Brush
BBICO recommends cleaning valve mechanisms approximately every six weeks. The appropriate maintenance interval may vary according to playing frequency, mechanical condition and the instrument manufacturer's recommendations.
- Disassembly. Carefully remove the pistons and accessible components according to the instrument manufacturer's instructions. Keep track of each piston's original position.
- Pre-cleaning. BBICO recommends using Edgware Brass Soak to loosen deposits before brushing.
- Mechanical cleaning. Carefully insert the Valve Brush Low Brass into a valve casing or passage of the correct diameter.
- Removing deposits. Move the brush gently backwards and forwards without excessive force.
- Rinsing. Thoroughly rinse away loosened deposits and any remaining cleaning product with clean water.
- Drying. Remove moisture using a soft, lint-free cloth such as Edgware Care Cloth and allow internal surfaces to dry.
- Lubrication and reassembly. Apply a suitable valve oil and reinstall the pistons, ensuring correct alignment and positioning.
Caution: do not brush the precision working surfaces of the pistons themselves. Never force the brush through openings that are too narrow. Avoid contact with felt, cork and other sensitive mechanical components. Severe corrosion or mechanical damage requires professional instrument servicing.

Edgware's environmental approach
British Band Instrument Company develops specialised wind instrument maintenance accessories with an emphasis on durability and reducing unnecessary waste.
The Edgware brushes use resilient nylon bristles designed to maintain their shape throughout repeated cleaning sessions. By making brushes last longer, the company aims to reduce the number of discarded accessories.
Packaging materials include:
- a compostable NatureFlex bag made from wood-based cellulose;
- a label produced in the EU from 100% recycled material;
- compostable packaging twine manufactured in the United Kingdom.
Edgware Valve Brush Low Brass is a practical cleaning accessory for musicians, music schools, brass bands and technicians maintaining euphoniums, tubas and other low brass instruments equipped with piston valves.
