Legere Classic Medium Hard Bassoon reed

Légère Reeds

Cane is a unique material—lightweight, yet very stiff along the grain. That combination is what makes it vibrate so well. Reproducing those properties in a synthetic material isn't easy—but it’s exactly what the company has done.

Légèere reeds are made from a special formulation of polypropylene—a non-toxic, food-safe polymer you’ll also find in medical equipment, yogurt cups, and packaging. On its own, polypropylene is far too flexible for a reed. So the company strengthens it through a process called orientation, which aligns the polymer fibers to dramatically increase stiffness. That’s the secret to the signature feel and response of a Légèere reed.

Because the Légèere material doesn’t absorb moisture, the reeds don’t need soaking, never warp, and are ready to play right out of the case. They’re durable, hygienic, and can be cleaned easily with warm water and a mild detergent. It’s cane—refined.

Bassoon Reed

The Légèere bassoon reed responds instantly from the box. Its unique material never needs to be moistened, allowing the player to focus on their music and not the reed. It projects easily and clearly while producing a clean and focused sound. It is available in Medium and Medium-Hard strengths to complement various styles of playing and setups.

The reeds are cut in halves using 3-axis, computer-controlled precision cutting machines and are never molded or stamped. The halves are then bonded together again using a digitally controlled system, resulting in a reed which is balanced in both blades and has the right combination of tip thickness, heart, and flexibility.

The combination of tip thickness, heart, and unique material makes it easy to glide from the low registers to the high registers of the instrument. While some of the top bassoonists in the world play this reed, it is also used by players of all levels.
