Thomastik DOMINANT PRO DP24 – Viola C String

Thomastik-Infeld DOMINANT PRO DP24 is a professional individual C string for 4/4 viola, featuring a synthetic core with tungsten-silver winding. With medium tension of 5.6 kg, it is part of the DOMINANT PRO DP200 string set. Designed for a rich lower register, powerful projection and exceptionally fast bow response.

Sound and playing characteristics

The C string provides the foundation of the viola's lowest register. Its role is to deliver depth and fullness without sacrificing articulation in fast passages or transitions to the neighbouring G string.

According to Thomastik-Infeld, DP24 combines substantial sound volume with extremely rapid response, even at very low pitches. Its slightly metallic upper overtones enhance projection while maintaining the dark and warm tonal foundation of the DOMINANT PRO series.

This design supports a broad dynamic range, from soft, deep bass notes to energetic playing with greater bow speed and pressure. Actual results depend on the individual viola, its setup and playing technique.

Synthetic core and tungsten-silver winding

The synthetic core provides elasticity and tonal flexibility. Tungsten's high density allows the string to achieve the mass required for a low C pitch without an excessively large diameter. Silver is also used in the winding construction.

Unlike the silver-wound DP23 G string, DP24 combines tungsten and silver to meet the acoustic demands of the viola's lowest register.

Selection, installation and care

DP24 is the replacement C string for the DOMINANT PRO DP200 set. It may also be considered in a custom string combination where direct response and reliable projection in the low register are desired.

The stated 37.5 cm is the specified vibrating string length between the nut and bridge, not the viola's body length. Bring the string gradually up to pitch and monitor the bridge position. Remove rosin dust with a soft, dry cloth after playing.
