Thomastik-Infeld DOMINANT PRO DP23 is a professional G string for 4/4 viola, featuring a synthetic core with silver winding. Sound and playing characteristics
The G string has a central role in the tonal balance of the viola, connecting the expressive middle register of the D string with the deep bass voice of the C string. Smooth transitions between neighbouring strings were a major priority in the development of DOMINANT PRO.
According to Thomastik-Infeld, DP23 provides a resonant, full-bodied fundamental tone with a light and airy overtone spectrum. This combination preserves the viola's warm, dark character while adding clarity and effective sound projection.
Its direct bow response allows precise control over articulation and dynamics in both lyrical passages and technically demanding playing. DOMINANT PRO is designed for a broad dynamic range, including performance with considerable bow pressure.
What makes DP23 special? It is designed as a tonal bridge between the D string DP22 and the C string DP24. Its combination of a resonant foundation and airy upper overtones contributes to a homogeneous sound across the set.
Synthetic core and silver winding
The synthetic core provides the elasticity and tonal flexibility needed for expressive playing. Silver winding adds the mass required for the G string without an excessively large diameter.
Within the DOMINANT PRO set, both the D and G strings use synthetic cores but different winding materials: chrome steel on D and silver on G. This combination forms part of the set's carefully balanced tonal design.

Selection, installation and care
DP23 is the replacement G string for the DOMINANT PRO DP200 set. It may also be considered for custom viola string combinations where a balance of warm fundamentals and clear overtones is desired.
The specified 37.5 cm is the vibrating string length between the nut and bridge, not the instrument's body length. Remove rosin dust with a soft, dry cloth after playing, and ensure correct positioning in the nut and bridge grooves.
Please note: this product contains one individual viola G string, not a complete set. The full A, D, G and C set is available as DP200.
